Original music for Tuesdays with Morrie
I wrote eight short numbers for Cedarville University's 2009 production of Tuesdays with Morrie. A piano was placed on stage, and Mitch's character "played" it while a pianist in the light booth did the actual playing; it worked out quite well. Cedarville's production of Morrie won five DayTony Awards, including Best Overall Production at the Collegiate Level and Award of Merit for Sound Design.
Katrina Gingerich, who played the piano part for
Cedarville's production, says, "I really enjoyed playing Steve's music for Tuesdays
with Morrie. Not only did it fit the mood of the play, but it helped develop the character's attitudes. The music is very easy to
integrate because there are convenient cadence points every few measures; they prevent awkward endings even in the rapid song sequences. It is also
easy to learn and fairly pianistic."
Printed sheet music (sample) or a recording is available for rent. The cost is based on the number of shows. I can also make custom recordings and write additional music; please contact me at grinninglion@hotmail.com for more information.
Sample the music for Tuesdays with Morrie (MP3, 3.8MB). A note about the last piece: Mitch is frustrated, and plays faster and faster, making more mistakes, until he slams his hands down on the keyboard to end the piece.
